I like the way you use "just". As if it's a small thing that hasn't been
addressed before. See

which was written earlier this month, so it's hardly out of date.

You seem to be operating on the assumption that this should somehow be
part of the official distribution before it's had time to mature and
develop a rabid following (even then, it's not a given, but that's
certainly the first step -- although without the "rabid" bit). It's
working excellently as an external project already, which eases the
burden on the maintainers of both Django's core and that external
project. That's an ideal situation for Open Source.

Also "navigate politics to get something accepted into trunk that isn't
particularly wanted at this time" isn't a Google Summer of Code project
and we're not likely to bless a project that covers ground already being
ably done by some other people. If you want to contribute to Django
there are many things that aren't already being duplicated somewhere
else. Please pick one of those (or head on over to django-sqlalchemy and
help them out).
