Re-reading this now that the great Internet has finally delivered it
back to my INBOX, I realise it came across more harshly than I intended.

By all means submit a proposal on something for working on Django for
Summer of Code. By all means work on SQLAlchemy + Django if that's an
area you wish to contribute to. In the latter case, however, it would
probably be better to work with the existing project, since they're
going about things in a way that gels nicely with Django. The problem
there is that working on something "in conjunction with others" doesn't
work for Summer of Code, since it's important to be able to tell what
the student did on their own -- those are Google's rules.

However, if you're going to submit a Summer of Code application, it
should be something that helps move Django in a direction we're wanting
to go. Go with the flow, not across the stream. Google pay you to help
Django.

So please don't be discouraged from applying for Summer of Code from
this thread. But do your research and see what's already been discussed
and what consensus has been reached in any area you're considering (ask
questions here, by all means, if your research is inconclusive).

Best wishes and good luck with your application,
Malcolm
