Recycle will help you cut your breaks up, but it won't make you Photek...Re-pogramming a chopped up drum is an art form as most of the people you name check prove...
I find the main secret is to layer your drum sounds and make sure that the re-programmed loop flows and has a groove 'cos if your beats haven't got a groove then your in deep do do when it comes to putting the bass in (IMO) as the bass and drums should work together so that really everything else is just an embelishment. I always have a section in my tunes that is JUST drum and bass and if that section doesn't work then IMO you should go back and look at the beats... My two penneth...
