Pam,
The explanation they gave you doesn't make any sense.

More likely that there was oil lost in a leak caused by the old sending unit
and they never filled it when they repaired it.

You noticed it was empty and refilled it, took it in to them.

They realized their mistake and BSed you.

As long as there's oil in the crankcase, it will show up on the stick; it
can't hide in the bottom.

Check the oil at every fill-up.  As long as you don't see the light come on
while driving and the level is fine when you check it, you're alright.  Make
sure the light comes on when you first go to start the car, otherwise the
bulb is burnt out and it can't warn you.

Start saving now for the next car and you should have enough in a few years
when this one finally dies.  (You should have that long.)  Find another
dealer; this one is playing on your fears.
