You only need 5 Watts for Arduino type applications and it heats up in 30 seconds, faster than a standard soldering iron. It works much better for 24 gauge or thinner wires. I even use it at my soldering workstation because it's easier to move around without a cord dangling all over the place. It doesn't require a special charge station so it's easy to power back up. If you like storing butinae containers, then the butane soldering iron is for you.

My butane torch I think was $2. You just have to heat things slowly with the air in front of the torch but it works in an emergency. I've only had to do it maybe twice.

I think I've seen other butane soldering kits like the Weller ones for $30.

Again, just not seeing the problem that the USB rechargeable iron is fixing with it only being 5 watts and pretty spendy. I'll admit it does have a certain geek chic to it though. Like an avant guard dress; amazing but not that practical. More stylish than a pocket protector but probably still not going to get you laid. (I'm being pretty tongue in cheek here, don't take offense)

Thats why I have my weller butane soldering iron. Near instant recharge, no electricity. Pull off the tip for a torch for bigger things. Hot air attachment too. Though they are not cheap, I think mine was about $80.

I'm still trying to figure out the use for a rechargeable soldering iron. It would seem that most anywhere there is electronics there would be power for a soldering iron. Even if you were doing repairs on a boat or in the field I'd guess there would be some source of power.  Or if you really were that far from power that you'd have backup whatevers so you wouldn't need to do field repairs.

What's the hackability potential for adding temperature control?
Doesn't the lack of having this limit it to non-IC soldering, at least
for beginners?
