Metcals are pretty awesome. I just recently picked up one for myself. But if you can't justify spending $700 on a soldering iron, I would go with the Hakko. They are built very solidly. I know this because the one I had bought my girlfriend survived a drop to the kitchen floor from a height of 4 feet, and didn't break, crack, or even have any sign that it had fallen. Worked perfectly without any problems, and is a nice iron to work with on top of that. Sparkfun carries them:
