Nothing ever works!  I bought a new USB Stick with 16 GB of space for this, because all the ones I have are USB A and the Mini only takes USB C.  When I plugged it in, it still didn't work, because the body of the connector pushed through the shell instead of the connector going in to the car!  (It's a dual USB A / USB C device where the unused end folds into the handle.)  Then I damaged the shell trying to pull it back....

I'm sure that the flat file requirement was the original problem, but now I can't even plug in the device.  ;-(

I'm going to send the duff device back (bad design) and go elsewhere for a new one.

So I got another USB Stick from Tesco. It is exactly the same as the one I got from Amazon (allegedly the same make (Integral) but clearly a counterfeit, because there is no logo or CE Mark (and it broke)).

So I'm now pretty sure that my latest USB Stick meets the requirements (scarce though they are) laid out by MINI, which is FAT32 or exfat, no other files on the stick, including directories or hidden files, and USB C. It still doesn't work. In due course, I will call in at the retailer (Marshalls in Poole) and demand that they find out what is wrong.

In the meantime, I'm reduced to playing the files over bluetooth from my Android phone. It works, but it's very clumky.
