locate(1) found I had one of those files here. The feh(1) image viewer opened it just fine. feh is not a GUI program, but it will at least let you look at the files. If you have a directory with the files of interest, then running plain ‘feh’ will have it display the images in that directory, of various types. You might prefer ‘feh -Fd.’ which will display them full screen, with the filename shown. Cursor keys: left/right are previous/next image; up/down are zoom. ‘q’ to quit.
