Thanks to all those suggestions given, a lot I'm not sure of.
However I down loaded the same files onto the PC (from scratch) and had the same problem with installed viewer: not surprising as they are the same version of Mint.  However on the PC I had 2 copies of Gimp, one a version 2 (as on the laptop), the second version is a flatpack and is version 3.2.  Tried the original installed version(2) and same problem as on Laptop.  Tried the flatpack(3) and that version worked, it showed Thumbnails and I was also able to export to a JPG.  With over 237 files to convert it would be a long slog. Some of the suggestion from Terry:-,  a lot of those did not show on my Mint upgrade programme so not tried.
May try Stephens code on a small selection but not today.

May bite the bullet and install the latest Gimp from Flatpack and delete the laptop installed package.

Thanks for your help.
Clive.

Just got back from visiting family in Switzerland and also the German Lace Congress (yearly visits).  While away a friend put some pictures on the Web for all to see and download.  They also gave instructions but not for Linux (as usual!). The files are in HEIC (HEIF) format from Apple I-phones.  I've checked some instruction but they all date back to pre 2025 versions of Mint. Details:  I have installed the Mint 22.3 (latest updates) 64bit, Cinnamon, Kernal=-generic.
on my laptop:-
heif-gdk-pixbuf 1.17.6-1ubuntu4.3
heif-thumbnailer 1.17.6-1ubuntu4.3
libheif-plugin-anmdec 1.17.6-1ubuntu4.3
libheif-plugin-libde256 1.17.6-1ubuntu4.3
lidheif1 1.17.6-1ubuntu4.3

These are all part of Mint listings for heif.  Not sure if the aomdec file is required as don't know what is is connected with.

Tried running with Digikam, Gimp and the installed viewer but none can open the files. (file not recognised) Any other help lease,  It can't be impossible, but not sure next step.  I know it's a high density file from newer 'phones so must be 'fixed' by now?

Thanks for any help as I've over 260 files to 'see'  (or should I say Lily needs to see).
