So it's not just me and my system.
Update:- tried several things on the PC with some success but not
enought to say it was 'solved'.
Decided yesterday to delete my copy of Digikam and reinstalled the
Fluthub (not flatpack!) version and all the HEIF/C files duly appeared.
So now both Digikam9+ and Gimp3.2 show those files.
Only Xveiwer 3.4.16 does not show the files (I can live with that).
