Thanks for the replies, I have sent one copy to Peter but have not had a reply yet, I intend to try to see if I have the same problems on the PC later this morning as that has Digikam 9 installed and I'll also look at Gimp and the image viewer (not sure if they are the same programmes as on the LT).
May also try the codes from Ralph to convert on block to either jpeg/png.
Will report back.

Yes or I think there might be online converters or I’d be happy to test one if
you wanted. (Also I have a Mac app which does bulk conversions)

Just a suggestion, is there anybody you could give a couple of the HEIC\HEIF
files to to check that they are not corrupt (somebody with a MAC)? If they are
you could spend a long time chasing your tail for nothing.

Hi all

Well I've tried Ralph's suggestions, downloaded 'graphicsmagick' and eventually got
his code to work but it came back on the first file says there was an 'error' but
no indication as to what was wrong. I've check the installed Digikam 8.2 on the
laptop and it says it would recognise 'heic/heif' files but my copies are in upper
case. So I added the uppercase HEIC & HEIF for recognition but it has not made
any difference.
I've also downloaded the pictures on the PC and will try Ralph's suggestions on
that machine to see if they work.

I'm assuming that I'm missing some code on the laptop installation as all
suggestions have failed; but I can't find what is missing.

Mint 22.3 programme manager does not show any 'Upgrades' for Digikam or Gimp,
if they do they are all as fatpacks and I've had trouble losing setups and
comments on files after 're-installing'.

Hi Clive,

Tried the [GIMP 3] and that version worked, it showed Thumbnails and
I was also able to export to a JPG. With over 237 files to convert it
would be a long slog.
Yes, very tedious. Don't do it like that.

Looks like there’s something called ‘heif-convert’:

```
sudo apt install libheif-examples
heif-convert input.heic output.jpg
```
May try Stephens code on a small selection but not today.
If you're happy to convert the hundreds of *.heic to another format just
to view them, then install package graphicsmagick, and

      cd directory/with/all/the/heic
      gm mogrify -format jpeg *.heic

This will read foo.heic then write foo.jpeg for each of the files
matching ‘*.heic’. It will take a while, and print nothing whilst doing
so.

JPEG is a lossy format, but you may not mind the degradation. If that
matters then use PNG instead, but it will use more disc space and time
than JPEG.
