Oh Yea, I have been checking e-Bay. The Drake stuff is more expensive
than I remember :-) A good r4c is out of my price range which is partly
why I'm looking at the R-4B or earlier. I recall from my C line
ownership days (mid to late 1980s) that I liked the extra AGC settings
and really like the crystal filtering. I also recall issues with filter
leakage and with overall high noise level from the many stages (similar
to most ham rigs).

Recently I've become rather tuned into the sound of a receiver. Last
fall I had a TS-830s that sounded very good. That rig was followed by
couple of TenTec Omni Vs. Both sounded a bit harsh and raspy. Both had
a high noise floor (lots of hiss with the signal). I had an Icom IC-735
and it's audio left me unimpressed. It hissed and had a "spikey" sound
similar to the Omni. My Elecraft K2 is very sweet with a low noise
floor & smooth sound. The K1 was even quieter.

If an R4* gives me sound as good as the 830s but also provides general
coverage receive, I'll be a happy camper.

FOLLOW ON QUESTION - What about tube availability? Are hollow-state
devices still available at reasonable prices for these vintage rigs?

73 & thanks all!
