Keith -

The R-4B is a very quiet receiver. "General coverage" takes either a large quantity of crystals, an FS-4, or one of the several FS-4 "equivalents" recently available designed around DDS chips from Analog Devices.

Tubes are still readily available, typically in the $2 - 3 range, with the exception of the 6HS6 which runs between $15 to $20. The good news is that the 6HS6 is a very long lived tube, at least in the R-4 series receivers. A couple of spares should be a "lifetime" supply for personal use. A $2 6AH6 is an excellent sub for at least the PreMixer stage of the R-4B. It will also work in the Mixer stage, but is slightly noisier than the 6HS6.

Same for the transmitters, with the exception of the 12BY7 ($7-10) driver and 6JB6 ($15-25) finals. Again, unless you do something stupid like letting your bias supply die, or forget to tune the transmitter, or connect the wrong antenna and try to tune it for a half hour, these will also last for many years. My main B Line finals are over 10 years old and still show full output. Other transmitters have 3-5 years on them with no problem. One set of spares should be a "lifetime" supply.

If an R4* gives me sound as good as the 830s but also provides general
coverage receive, I'll be a happy camper.

FOLLOW ON QUESTION - What about tube availability? Are hollow-state
devices still available at reasonable prices for these vintage rigs?
