The "original" crystal color is indicated by the letter at the end of the serial number. Red, Blue, Green and sometimes Yellow. The "actual" crystal color is determined by a stripe of paint on the side of the crystal itself. These two are nominally the same, but some have been changed over the years, so it's best to check the paint stripe!

The "color" only indicates the "long term" stability of the Transceive Align. If your units are not transceiving on the same frequency, you need to do the Transceive Align procedure described in the T-4X(any) manual. When this procedure is done correctly, the units will be exactly on the same frequency. When room temperature varies, receivers and transmitters heat and cool, and crystals age, crystals with the same color code tend to "drift together", therefore staying in alignment. Crystals with different color codes may drift in the same direction at different rates, or even drift in opposite directions, causing the two units to go out of alignment.

Keep in mind that we are talking about frequency changes of 30 - 60 Hz, which is a LOT for an SSB signal, but negligible for any other mode. Again, this is _ONLY_ of concern for transceive operation, and has no effect on any other mode.

Garey,

On this discussion of color-coded crystals for the R-4B/T-4XB combo,
I purchased my pair at different times. I know I have the offset when I transceive. How do I check what I have. My question is to satisfy my curiosity only, I run split 100% of the time.

Thanks,
