Yeah, just add 50 years and a hundred pounds (or so) and you got it! :-)

From your reply below, I'm referring to the C1 end of the crystal being at ground potential. It should be grounded by S1B to short out C1. C1 is inserted in CW and AM modes to shift the oscillator up about 900 Hz. Dirty or corroded switch contacts can leave that "open".

If so, we've taken care of the obvious. It won't hurt to add a small silver mica cap across the trimmer, 15-20 pF or so. The trimmer has a 40 pF delta, and you probably need 5-10 pF more. Keep in mind that the "absolute" final frequency is determined by the "notch" between the two filters.

Ok Thanks Garey

Yep the old mind transposed once again.

Yes the crystal is grounded just fine. This is a new xtal.

I suppose now I need to pad C2 some how.

The crystal in my R-4A receiver was off by a lot and the new one was right on. When I ordered them I made sure I got a pair that was temperature oriented in such a way to keep the Tx Rx pair with the same drift characteristics
as was mentioned in one of your articles I read somewhere.
Actually the old T4X crystal was closer to 5645 then the new one. Any other ideas would be helpful.

I enjoyed seeing your picture in the Electric Radio. Boy you're a young handsome devil!!!

Thanks Jim

I hope you mean 5646.11 kHz !!

Be sure the MODE switch is NOT in CW when you are trying to set the frequency. If OK, then be sure that the crystal terminal connected to C1 is actually grounded.

C6 is for the balanced modulator, and will have to be set as described in Section IV, C of the manual.

Hi Drake Experts
/
/I have put a new 5645 xtal in my T-4X transmitter and using the C2 cap can only get the frequency to 4546.11.

Is this normal and is it close enough. I needed to install a 5595 xtal in my R-4A and it came on freq just fine.

What is the C6 cap by T-14 used for I see no changes in any readings when turned.

Thanks

Jim
