Office 98 for the Mac and the new office 2001 are great and you will not
have a problem with either on going from Mac to pc and back. Even if the
person has an older version of Mac office. Although I do recommend that you
install the converters that come with the program. Just send the doc's as
attachment's.

>>At risk of moving way off the list topic and recognizing that I may be
having a brain cramp, but I offer the following:
I agree that the PC Office file formats CAN be read easily by a Mac and vice
versa, however I have found that I have to type in a file extension on my
filenames (.doc for Word files, .xls for Excel files, etc.) or the PC will
usually not recognize it as a Word or Excel file. In other words, the PC
user cannot open the file by double clicking. They can, however, open it
from within Word or Excel using the open command in the file menu.
The PC is apparently not smart enough (what a surprise!) to recognize the
file without an extension. The reverse is not true and my Macs never have
any problem opening files created in the PC version of MS Office. I have
always thought this was a bug and an unfortunate oversight in trying to make
the two completely compatible. If I forget to type in an extension I have to
either tutor the PC user on how to open the files or resend them with the
appropriate filename extensions.
Has anyone else experienced this or am I overlooking something in my Office
setup? I've never seen anything in the literature or Office help that
addresses this. Everything I've seen says that the file formats are
identical. That may be true but naming conventions (extensions on filenames)
are apparently critical. Any thoughts?
