You got it!  The driver chip I mentioned is the matrix driver on the board 
physically attached to the LCD itself.  Not easy to change out.  If one of 
the driver chips is dying, it <<could>> give the effect you mentioned.  Crank 
the display up with it disassembled and see if one chip is getting hotter 
than the rest.  If so, a new display is called for unless you have the 
equipment to swap SMT chips off the driver board.  I've fixed one, and don't 
plan to do two!  It is NOT easy.  Cheapest solution is to borrow a 2300 or 
280c display and see if it is the logic board or the display.  The 230 
display uses a different driver circuit on the logic board, so that may not 
be an accurate test.
