Ilene, this is a compilation of two postings Paul Vail made awhile
back during previous discussions about the PRAM battery. He's on the
road now or I expect he would have chimed in. This will give you a
bit more insight to the process.

I don't remember, but I assume you have a PRAM battery...they are
relatively hard to come by, but are still available for around
$35-$85.

If you are really going to take it apart, I'd put a new one in there
since most 2400s are at least three years old by now. If you have
someone like MCE, DT&T or Paul do it, I'd consider having the CardBus
upgrade done at the same time and/or a bigger HD put it. Once it's
open, do everything. ;-)

".....The 2xx, 5xx, 2300, 2400, 1400, 3400... uses a battery pack
with pigtail leads to the motherboard. For the most part, each
configuration requires a different geometry of battery pack.
Getting back to the 2400, the battery is a custom manufacture, not
available through your normal sources or the original manufacturer,
Varta. The battery pack is welded together, properly sealed, and a
pigtail wire assembly attached to it. This is not something the
normal person has to face when they are replacing a 1/2 AA in a
desktop box. I've been replacing PRAM batteries in powerbooks for
about 5 years (we had a rental fleet for the movie studios in
Wilmington -- maybe the most demanding portable environment one can
imagine: a beach town, salt water, hurricanes, acting talent,
directors, producers, crew, tight time budgets... oh what fun :) )

Proper removal of the battery pack requires removal of the bottom
clam shell from the collection of mother/daughterboards (what is
referred to in your note above as the logic board). Only removing
some of the screws to pry apart the boards from the bottom bends the
boards and places undue stress on the remaining screw seats (which
are in molded plastic, not a very forgiving material as many of us
already know). It is far safer to remove the entire bottom.

Significant damage will occur to the 'book if the battery is not
installed properly, or the owner can inadvertently short out the
battery during the installation, rendering it useless. Because of
these inherent dangers, we no longer sell this battery outright.
Just too many libelous individuals out there. We will do the
installation for you (which does require nearly complete disassembly
of the 2400 -- about an hour bench time with testing)."
