It kind of sounds like an internal trace crack of some sort.

Keep in mind that most contemporary printed circuit boards consist of several 
(or many) layers in addition to the top and bottom ones, and none of which 
are visible with out making an X-ray of it... which means that there may be a 
crack on one of those internal layers.
