Ricochet's future is very cloudy as of today. They're liquidating all assets to pay off creditors on 8/16, (they have about $700 million in debt), laying off even more employees and a letter is on the way to it's 52,000 subscribers. They don't say much at all to subscribers, all that their web site offers is a stale Chapter 11 FAQ and a lot of bankruptsy boilerplate.
Nasdaq has informed Metricom that they're about to be de-listed, which is a moot point as trading was suspended on July 2nd. Tomorrow, a WSJ article reports that the CEO said that service was to be shut down "in a few days".
This is a damn shame because the service worked great. If it had succeeded it would have been like having Airport Internet access everywhere you went.
It's a pity that Ricochet will probably go down as one of coolest and most useful of the dot-com flameouts. Unfortunatly, the market for mobile internet was competing against access people already had at work. It didn't help either that telecoms were apparently persuaded not to buy into Metricom's technology by the ridiculous concept of cell phone internet access.
<heavy sigh>
