I *did* buy one last week (a combo model, because they
were on sale at Circuit City), took it home but didn't
open the box, and yesterday took it back for a full
refund.
I had convinced myself that I could live with the
limitations-- principally the VGA out limits-- but the
more I thought about it I would get irritated all over
again (I'm like that). Features left out are one
thing, features included but half-assed are another.
Plus, even with the discount, to me the combo model
isn't a very compelling value compared to the other
models. Finally, every time I looked at it I thought,
"I can't believe I spent $1772 on something that looks
so cheesy"-- I know most people disagree, but to me,
white = cheap, glossy white = cheap + tacky. And for
something that is intended to be handled frequently,
especially by young students, an exterior which is
both slippery and shows greasy handprints seems like
triumph of form over function. Good product design
considers how the object will be used.
Perhaps if another color appears, I might consider a
DVD model. Or later on I'll buy an out-of-warranty
unit and experiment with custom painting. Until then I
will have to keep good old Maximilian Duo ("Max",
because he is a 2300c 56MB/3GB/modem config). He's not
in daily use anymore but he still makes me smile.
