Because most of strain usually concentrated to small area, cables used are so
soft that they easily bend.
Well, I have used volcanic tape (When strained and warped molds to one clean
surface) or shrink-wrap. Tape is good but expensive. Shrink-wrap is cheaper.
Just put it far enough spread load to larger area, so that when bending cable
it makes larger bend instead of small tight bend.
In case of emergency a electrical tape will do the trick.

Many years ago (early '70s), a company named Sennheiser introduced their
headphones (the HD414) to the USA market and I bought a pair. As a DJ, the
abuse I gave them was pretty harsh, and it wasn't long before I had to
replace the cables. They were thin, coaxial copper wire cables, only slightly
smaller than the 2400's power supply cable. After two replacements, I was
getting a little tired of the repetition!
While Sennheiser was probably reveling in the lucrative after-market business
they were getting, I guess they realized they had a flawed design. That was
when they came out with STEEL cables. About the same size, but noticeably
stiffer, they lasted several years.
A piece of that steel cable would come in pretty handy the next time (and
there WILL be a next time!) I repair my 2400...
