I have to agree with Chuck here. If you are adamant on using the 2400, I
personally have installed LinuxPPC on it, and it worked fine. It wasn't
too messy of an install, but it wasn't my first install by any means,
and it will be non-standard. (which isn't necessarily a problem, it just
makes it more complicated to get help, set up a network card, etc.)
Using an older pentium will prove easier, IMHO. Either way, I recommend
a few projects to force you to become a bit more accustomed to the CLI.
(Command Line Interface) I have personally found that completing a
project of one sort or the other on the linux box will be very helpful.
I set up a Samba server in our office a few years ago to allow Windows
clients to connect to the linux box. It was a bit arcane, but it proved
very helpful. If you prefer doing the same with macintosh clients (and
who wouldn't?) you can install DAVE from Thursby systems on the mac or
install Netatalk on the linux server instead of samba.
Other ideas include setting up a firewall if you have a broadband
connection, or setting up an Apache Web server. (Even if all you do is
screw around by loading web pages locally from your 2400, it will force
you to learn a lot about Linux and apache/samba/whatever.
Your best bet is lurking in the USENET newsgroups for tips and help.
