I've just begun experimenting/learning/playing-around-with SuSe Linux on an
old Pentium that was given to me. So my reactions to the previous posts are
those of a novice...
The Linux whizzes on this list generally advise biting the bullet and
limiting oneself to the command line interface.
My reaction? I like xwindows!!! I like the desktop. It is easier than Mac or
PC to manage multiple jobs...
So I'm going to balance my command-line learning with xwindows learning. I
primarily use computers to... do work, not to mess with computers. So the
xwindows environment is the big attraction for me. (A Linux guru I used to
work for advised me that I might as well avoid Linux and concentrate on what
I do best. I guess I've disobeyed his sage advice...)
No one has mentioned Yellow Dog Linux, which is aimed at PowerPC
computers... (I almost bought a disk the other day.)
I believe it is Debian that has developed a special version of Linux for 68k
machines. I assume that xwindows requires more speed than a pre-PowerPC can
offer... If that's not the case, I may someday put Linux on my 280c. SuSe
also has a 68k setup option, but I've heard negative things about it...
Finally: there's a special listserv for Linux + Macs, no?
