No sense wasting money on a "Windows" box when a "Dos" box will do!
Microsoft has people brainwashed into thinking that you need new
hardware for everything. For learning *nix, you will get the same
results from a 386 as from anything newer.
I agree with using an Intel box. As a beginner trying to learn *nix
you won't want to have to deal with the challenges of going off the
beaten path. It's very easy to find help and advice (and binaries)
for Linux/Intel.
