Surely something like this must have something to do with it. The mfrs
of Li-ion cells apparently insist that they be sold only with the
recharge logic embedded into the battery case to guard against
whatever catastrophe arises from mischarging. (I cracked open a bad
2400 batt & found more intricate construction on its PC board than on
the 2400's motherboard. Likewise, the folks who offered to swap out
old cells can't have been too happy with the failure rate of their
service tied to faulty logic in the case, rather than tired
cells. (I know I wasn't.)
These puppies are expensive (and failure-prone) for other reasons
besides their limited demand. There must be considerable
engineering & QC expenses that will have to be amortized across a
very short production run. The business opportunity for the firms
is fading, too as users mothball the machines or consign them to
non-mobile use.
I'd recommend that listas who want backup or replacement battery
capability move quickly to get what they can -- don't restrict
yourself to somebody's good intentions that may not be realized
for good economic reasons.
