Whoever said buy two drives was very smart. I had an external HD and backed up faithfully. I got up one morning and the external HD had died. I now use an external drive and thumb drive. BTW, the .bat program that was described is a great idea. Someone wrote one for me but I can't figure out how to get it going again with the new external drive.
