(Oh, I have to say why? Ok...)

I want IDEA to replace as many tools on my machine as possible. Notepad
(for quick file editing), Together (*basic* UML views), Multi-Edit (multiple
file-type support), hex-editor (duh), file explorer (for launching other
tools based on extension), etc. etc. etc..

Just being the best Java IDE is not my idea (!) of the best tool. In my
mind the best tool is the one that helps me to be more productive at all the
tasks I work on. Having to switch between tools is one factor that slows me
down.

Of course IDEA is the best Java IDE. We're just greedy. :)

Subject: [Eap-features] type 1 people are wrong

So, apparently there are 2 kinds of active posters on this list :

 type 1 : the IDEA_is_an_editor_and_I_want_to_keep_my_editor_slim
 type 2 : the
IDEA_is_a_tool_and_I_want_it_to_be_more_than_an_Editor__a_lot_more

type 1 people will -1 or -10 any high level or visual feature request,
because
1- they are afraid IDEA developpers could postpone the next hundred editor
tweekings they have in mind, and think they could not be productive
    without them.
2- they are afraid IDEA will become slow
3- they are afraid IDEA will become big

You don't mix up requirements collections with time, cost, architecture and

technology. You just tell what you need.

I say type 1 people are wrong, and here is why:

point 1 : Intellij development team size is not your business. It's theirs.
point 2 : have some faith, in Intellij, your VM vendor and Intel (or..).
Don't tell me me you fear they would have to rewrite in in C.
Look at Together : it's big, it's fast, and it does code
auditing.
point 3 : Who cares if the next EAP is 20M big. If you download the eap
build
           at 56K, poor you.
This is 2001, year of cable speed, cheap hard disk and cheap
memory.

I say type 2 people are right.
IDEA is a tool, and I use it to solve problems, using java technology.
Java technology is becoming more complex by the day.
Why does IDEA force me to edit all those xml configuration files as ascii
text?
Do you really think it's less important than tweeking the Search function?

BTW, I wonder why it was so urgent to integrate ..
CVS : I still use WinCVS, next to IDEA, because... well, you know...
JUnit : it just brought very very little extra confort, but absolutely no
       new functionalilty.
SourceSafe : see CVS, above. Even with VB, I know many programmers who
preferred
to use the standalone, non integrated version. They still do, with
IDEA, and
        they don't plan to change.

OTOS:
- Dead Code finder : ONLY IDEA CAN DO THIS FOR ME. What are you waiting for?
- simple UML class diagram : I hate having to launch together just to have a

quick 1 mile high view of the structure.
- class templates
- metrics based auditing
- smell detector
...

We have to think ROI here, guys.
I'm sure you could tweek the editor till 2010, but it wouldn't help us write
better software. The editor is no longer n1 when you think ROI. It's almost
good enough.
I love the keyboard, but I want higher level features. And some visuals too
(the class hierarchy browser is not a gadget. This is the way to go)

OK, shoot me. Or ignore me.

PS: I'm not sure feature request voting would be such a good idea. This list
is
where things happens. Here, when you say +1, you must say why.
