True enough.

If someone privately mailed me with such an overture, the first thing I would do would
be to publicly "out" them by forwarding the letter to the entire list. But I have no
doubt that sort of fishing takes place between racists, pedophiles, and other
undesireables seeking comparably tendencied companions.
This is why I noted

This could be true of the Kaczynski Luddite approach (now there's a scary little
book), but there are very few feminist racists that I've met (at least, who are
willing to admit to such a contradiction as to be in favor of the emancipation of one
group while supporting the servitude of another).

Good points, although most likely someone of that ilk would subscribe to this list
only to lurk and spy. I mentioned my home state only because of your northwest
reference, but we have our share of nuts here, mainly KKK-ers,
creationism-in-school-ers and militant antiabortionists (and frequently people who
belong to one of these will belong to more).
