>The owners
>insisted that their dog could never do this.

I read this message by accident, having already deleted other messages that
warned me they were about dog attacks, a topic I have no interest in
knowing about.

Let me tell you a story.

I was reassured by a dog owner some years ago, that , although their dog
had a history of attack and was trained as an outdoor watchdog, it would
not bite anyone in their living room. Just after hearing him say it would
not bite, I lost consciousness.

When I woke up in the emergency ward, the attending physician advised me
that if I had been a child, the dog's attack would have killed me. All I
have is a memory of the owner saying that the dog would not bite and seeing
it lunge towrd me.

Every time I see a loose dog and the owner says, oh don't worry he/she
doesn't bite, I stop and take time to tell my little story. It has yet to
impress any such dog owner. They invariably repeat to me, after my little
story, that THEIR dog won't bite.
