We were forced to move over in January to the new servers.  We were very
hesitant to do so as this was our second time
trying to move as we had a horrible experience the first time and had to
revert back to old.

We were effected last week and could not communicate with GXS for about 5
hours.

Here is the OFFICIAL root cause explanation.  Again, it is important
that we can believe on what they are telling us and that is why I am
asking that those who have already transitioned to the new data center
chime in and advise if they were indeed affected or not.

Dear Mr. Moses,

GXS is committed to our customers' success.  On Wednesday, February
21st, 2007, certain GXS customers were impacted by a service
interruption to our global messaging service on GXS Trading Grid.   Over
the past two years we have been working to upgrade our infrastructure to
support our customer's rapidly evolving real-time information flow
requirements.

While we have made substantial progress in our next-generation
infrastructure platform, we also continue to operate traditional
infrastructure until fully transitioned.  This service interruption was
a result of infrastructure and an architecture which is being phased
out-of-service this year.

We realize that the reliability of our service has a direct impact on
your business and we sincerely regret any impact this service
interruption may have caused.

Please find below the internal review results and action plans designed
to prevent a repeat occurrence and ensure the reliable flow of
information for our customers.

Incident Summary
On Wednesday, February 21, 2007, GXS Trading Grid Messaging Service
(formerly known as ICS), experienced a service interruption beginning at
approximately 10:45AM Eastern time.  While the service was fully
restored by 3:30PM Eastern time, transaction backlogs, successfully
queued during the event, continued processing for several hours.
Customers already upgraded to our next generation infrastructure (GXS
Trading Grid Ultra Infrastructure) were not impacted.

Root Cause
The root cause for this service interruption was a hardware processor
failure.  When the hardware failure occurred the system immediately
rolled over to the backup infrastructure, as planned.  The hardware
failure caused file corruption which required a longer than normal
recovery process due to the need to rebuild files and run integrity
checks. We took this course of action to ensure data integrity and to
minimize any future risk to our customers.

GXS Action Items

The actions taken during this incident to fully restore service were as
follows:

 *    GXS engineering and global operations teams immediately
responded to alerts and commenced investigation of the event.
 *    Notified our clients of the outage (and updated every 30
minutes)
 *    Failover to backup systems occurred as planned
 *    File system corruption was determined and an index
rebuild was ordered to ensure integrity
 *    Rebuilt and validated indexes were restored and the
messaging service was fully restored



The following preventative GXS actions are in progress to prevent a
future occurrence or impact to customers:

 *    GXS is accelerating the upgrade of customers to our next
generation platform - GXS Trading Grid Ultra Infrastructure.  With its
inherent failover design and new systems and database architecture, GXS
Trading Grid Ultra would not be impacted by this scenario.  Today, over
700 customers have been upgraded to this infrastructure.   We are
seamlessly upgrading the remaining customers throughout 2007.  The
infrastructure is built on a blade-server virtualization system,
supported by a high-speed switching fabric, and is a 100% database
driven architecture using Oracle 10g.
 *    GXS will improve its customer notification system.
While our notifications provide full disclosure of events, in this case,
they lacked additional information to help our customers assess the
current situation.  We will improve our notification system to provide
both timely as well as useful information.

We are trying to sort this all out. From what I was informed, GXS has
several servers, the one that did interconnects to other VANS was down.
So if you were going from GXS to customer/vendor, you were ok, but if
you had to interconnect with another VAN you had failure. We had failure
and not a word from anyone!! Did anyone else get this info? They say
that they do send out notifications but only to clients ... so what if
you are a customer of a client?? How do we find out?

I did get the official statement from GXS regarding the outage. I will
forward or post if you wish. GSX is indicating that if you were with
their new data center (transitions in process but supposedly 600 already
transitioned), you would not have had an issue. Interestingly, I did
not see any posts from a single GSX customer indicating they remained
operational. I am now attempting to determine the validity of the
statement.

So are there any GXS VAN customers that DID remain up ?

I simply emailed them and asked to be put on their notification list
anytime a broadcast message is sent such as system down or upcoming
system maintenance planned outages.

It took much less time than deleting the "GXS is the devil" horde of
emails.

Technology does have its ups and downs, but why not notify your
customers when you go down????? I have used the Sterling
Commerce VAN
for over 10 years and they are good at letting you know when
they are
doing updates, when they are refreshing or having to shut down
for
patches at nite. Then they even send out emails to let you know
when it
is back up. We have not had services go down during production
hours
ever that I can remember. They "take care of their customers."
We send out PO's to our VAN they go to GXS to our vendor and
.....
??????? We had 17 orders that ?????? did they get them? Why
can't GXS
inform their customers when they go down???? Just a simple
request
.... oh and they want to get paid for their inability to keep
their
system running???
