Good question !
I'm currently producing metrics for a company, but it's production and scrap
data. And, I was in aerospace for 15 years as a cost analyst. But I've never
added those and EDI together.
At my last job, I did keep track of the VAN costs, and any EDI related
chargebacks. I never did any X over Y kind of analysis tough.
I would think number of transactions is really dependent on what come in,
verses number of people working, EDI is usually automated, and really doesn't
care if there's 10 or 10,000 transactions (To a certain point,of course). So if
your metrics are tranactions/people, that's going to vary wildly.

OK, so here's a Friday question...does anyone analyze the cost of EDI?
At my company we use these measurements to compare our performance year to
year - are we getting more or less value out of the resources in each
period, etc. We also use them to compare to similar numbers across
industries to see if we are performing well in comparison to others. For
instance our corporate help desk totals all the staff, office space,
computers & equipment etc and comes up with a cost per call to the help
desk. I think it sits around $12 right now which is on the low side of
average.
So I can count up all the costs of servers and software maintenance, VAN
fees, etc., but what is my divisor? Cost per what?? I can count the EDI
transactions but that doesn't cover the non-EDI data that goes through our
servers untranslated. I archive everything systematically in folders by
month so I could compare the MB of data in each month which does get the
non-EDI stuff. What I am curious about is if anyone else here has done this
exercise, what you used for your metric divisor and why?
Thanks so much for any thoughts you have on the topic
Samantha
