Not to interject a bean-counting analysis to this, but aren't the
hardware/server costs and possibly software costs, office equipment etc.
amortized/depreciated? If so, wouldn't this would affect your overall
result?

It's a very good question, I'm just wondering about this component of
the metric.

Subject: RE: [EDI-L] EDI Cost Analysis

I would suggest that the metric would vary greatly depending on the
industry but since we are a sales based company our metric would be EDI
cost as a percentage of all sales and EDI cost as a percentage of sales
handled via EDI.

Subject: [EDI-L] EDI Cost Analysis

OK, so here's a Friday question...does anyone analyze the cost of EDI?

At my company we use these measurements to compare our performance year
to year - are we getting more or less value out of the resources in each
period, etc. We also use them to compare to similar numbers across
industries to see if we are performing well in comparison to others. For
instance our corporate help desk totals all the staff, office space,
computers & equipment etc and comes up with a cost per call to the help
desk. I think it sits around $12 right now which is on the low side of
average.

So I can count up all the costs of servers and software maintenance, VAN
fees, etc., but what is my divisor? Cost per what?? I can count the EDI
transactions but that doesn't cover the non-EDI data that goes through
our servers untranslated. I archive everything systematically in folders
by month so I could compare the MB of data in each month which does get
the non-EDI stuff. What I am curious about is if anyone else here has
done this exercise, what you used for your metric divisor and why?

Thanks so much for any thoughts you have on the topic

Samantha
