I've got Word 97 and have never had the problems you describe. 
Something else must be going on, though. I can't tell you what. I 
can tell you the problem is not as simple as "Word 97 Equation 
Editor is buggy."

Have you tried the standard advice? Uninstall Word and reinstall it 
from scratch, in case you have a corrupt file somewhere.
