One other "quick and dirty" option that I don't think has been mentioned is to key the 
'grave accent' character (0060, located to the left of the 1 on my keyboard) and 
change its font to 'Symbol'. This results in a horizontal bar positioned more or less 
over the character to its right. You can then adjust the font size of the grave accent 
to line it up over the X a little better. Not perfect, but sometimes a little easier 
than invoking the equation editor.
