Your question relates specifically to Microsoft Word, but I understand that OpenOffice includes a fairly good equation editor, "Math".
I mention it because OpenOffice is a free download from http://www.openoffice.org, and may be a viable alternative to those who don't want to pay for Microsoft Office.
