Dave, There isn't a contradiction between what Lyle and John describe. Lyle was taking a conservative approach to the issue. Nothing wrong with that. John did some extensive tests and found it wasn't necessary. Both approaches are equally correct.
Being lazy, and after reading John's test results I decided not to replace L1. Eight months later I can say it wasn't necessary to replace L1. As in most things Elecraft, there are more than one way to skin the cat. The fact that we are offered a number of choices to arrive at our desired destination is a very good thing.
