Hi--
After eons of using Emailer with no
problems, I am getting a recurring startup freeze
(splash screen is blank, computer has to be restarted).
The solution I've found is to 1) do a "typical
rebuild" then b) toss out Finder & System prefs, then
c) restart. Usually this works and Emailer will start
up again. (Sometimes I have to do the Advanced rebuild after
that). Then, a couple days later it happens again.
I've tried doing all the usual management things--
check for viruses, run TechTool 3, delete desktop, zap
PRAM, run DiskWarrior, and I tried tossing out the Emailer
prefs in the Claris folder. Problem still recurs.
Emailer has 30MB assigned to it. Currently the
Mail database is 16MB and the Mail index is 2.7. I have
tried reducing the database by throwing stuff out.
Seems to help temporarily...
I have a few theories:
1) extension conflict? I use OS8.6 with an awful lot of
stuff added on, FW extensions, etc.--would it help to finally
move up to 9.1?
2) message deletion--it kind of seems like the problem
might be related to messages being deleted. If I clear out
some folders I'm guaranteed to need a Rebuild next time I start.
3) Virtual memory strangeness--I like VM off, but something seems
to be re-setting it to ON in the course of normal use. I don't
understand this and wonder if there's a connection.
Any ideas, please?? I'd do a complete reinstall if I
have to, but would rather be sure it's necessary first.
