Thanks David, for your contribution - but once I realized that I had
mistakenly designated the wrong folder for Claris Emailer Files, I
deleted the new Mail folder that had been created (with the new empty
database)and redesignated the location. My original database was still
where it had been, exactly where you said it should be.

It just wouldn't work. Only mail received after relocating the Files
would open.

So, late last night I foolishly tried experimenting by swapping out and
back in the 2 versions ( as well as the confusing number of copies this
created).

Unfortunately, I completely lost track of the sequence of events and can
only say that I think I did the following:

- at first try even the recent mail became frozen
- at a subsequent try, the newly recreated personal folders (Emailer,
Drafts, etc)morphed into "Orphaned Folder"
- every time I tried to go back to a previous (perhaps better?)version it
no longer existed - every time I swapped a version in a new Mail Database
file would be created alongside it which it would then resemble.
-I think I then tried Rebuilding the Database and the options box gave me
no choice but an advanced rebuild or cancel (the normal rebuild was
dimmed and inoperable). This resulted in an empty Browser. I deleted
this new version and tried rebooting using the Mail DB (old) and its
Browser was also empty.
-I tried to go back to a copy of the original database file and it just
automatically brought up the same Rebuild Options box with the single
choice between Advanced and Cancel. I finally ended up trying to rebuild
it and ended up with empty folders,

Ergo, I have now lost all my mail.

I expect it is gone for good and am resigned to this fate - but if there
is any way of retrieving it that anyone knows of , I'd appreciate hearing
about it.

Also, what the heck was happening and how can rebuild without fear in the
future?

Grinning and bearing it,

Tannis
