I took Helder and Chris's advice and after a couple of false starts: - using the original database (modified earliest and, yes, the only large one and yes incorrectly named), and deleting the Mail Index, did an advanced rebuild - which took some time - a good sign.
= all old mail is back (not of course any of today's but it is mostly inconsequential)and all is openable. I do not know what I did to cause such havoc but it is now cured and I am happy.
