For some time now I've been experiencing weird behavior from Emailer, and
wonder if anyone has insight and maybe a solution.

First the equipment - Emailer 2.03, Performa 6400/180, Sonnet G3/400
upgrade, 136 MB RAM (max), OS 8.6, VM on (137 MB), lots of extensions but
no changes recently. "Upgrade" from 8.5.1 to 8.6 is the most recent, some
months ago.

Last night Emailer crashed, after which it wouldn't open the browser
window at all, and attempts to open any folder to view the mail in it
were met with the "unstuff a file" error. Emailer would launch, with the
toolbar and the connection status windows open. If I did Cmd-B for the
browser (or from the window menu) the command would highlight in the
menu, but not execute. If I did Cmd-L (folder list) I'd get the list, but
couldn't open a folder (error reported above). In two separate attempts
to rectify this behavior, I trashed the Emailer prefs, and replaced the
application itself from a known good backup - no change in behavior.

An attempt to do a typical rebuild crashed at the very end with a type 11
error ('the application " " crashed...etc.) BTW, the application was
really empty between the quotes - this happens sometimes with Internet
Exploder, as well. An advanced rebuild finally got me my browser window
back, minus all my log files (which is a drag, because I'm way behind on
my mail).

I've also been having a strange experience with new folders. If I create
a new folder, it doesn't show the messages in the browser window. When I
double click the folder, the messages show in the new window. It's a
pain, but livable. At first I though my folder list had gotten too big,
so I archived some folders I no longer use, and deleted more that I
thought I didn't need any more. Got rid of about a dozen folders, but the
new folders still exhibited the annoying behavior. This was not fixed by
an advanced rebuild, BTW.

Back in August I reported a strange adventure with the AutoFile Logs,
which Michelle Steiner was able to help me fix with an advanced rebuild.

Since the change to 8.6, I've gotten a lot more "this message permanently
deleted" in the wrong folders, necessitating a rebuild.

Any ideas what is going on here? Suggestions for action? I'm somewhat
hesitant to reinstall, worried that I might end up not being able to read
the old databases.

TIA for any help or insights.

David
