One thing to think about in choosing Cable or DSL. In my area, I can get
broadband Optimum Online cable modem service from my cable TV provider,
Cablevision.
I can get DSL from Verizon. (Interestingly, I can't get DSL or cable modem
from Earthlink or any other supplier, although they all use the same wires.)
Verizon says "we don't support Macintosh. It might work, it might not. But
we don't support Macintosh, and we won't even talk to you about Macintosh."
Optimum Online says "We support Mac. Press 1... etc. to talk to tech
support."
It's pretty easy to connect a Mac to either DSL or cable modem. My home
network supports 7 computers and three printers, and maybe an X-Box or two,
all through
Cable modem -> Netgear wire + wireless router -> 2 hubs.
There is some configuration of the router, but otherwise it's pretty easy to
handle.
Verizon's DSL modem supposedly contains a 4-port router in it. That would
be nice to have, included in the price.
But I say, screw 'em. If they say "we won't support Mac," I'll try to take
my business elsewhere.
