http://askubuntu.com/questions/16446/how-to-get-my-software-into-ubuntu,
while one step removed from the official statements, has a useful
overview of the process; it touches on both Debian and Ubuntu.

Having a simulator in a package repository is a nice touch but I don't
consider the CD "requirement" to be a spoiler. As a LiveCD (more likely
used as a live memory stick these days) it allows one to assess LinuxCNC
without messing with a working system no matter the O/S or its dialect.
As well, I believe even casual evaluators come to CNC software via
developers' websites and not via a search of their system's package
repository.

I'll grant there are potential users lacking adequate Internet access
who don't like downloading a CD image, but the whole
install/update/upgrade philosophy of many Linux distributions is
predicated on Internet access so I consider this issue a wash.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Regards,
Kent
