It isn't quite the same thing, but users of non-trivial-kins machines report that something keeps switching them back to Joint Mode on auto/mdi switches. I agree, and I feel that perhaps Axis should make the flip automatically rather than rely on your new pin being correctly connected in HAL. I don't think that this mode flip should travel through HAL, precisely for the reasons you are raising. > 4.
