David, I was able to successfully use a 5 pin 50 amp circular connector on mains connections of a product for Europe back in 1999. At that time there were no European agencies that had approved, certified, recognized or whatever, any US military style connectors.
Because my customer was so insistent, I personally evaluated the connector in question to the IEC 309-1 - Plugs, socket-outlets and couplers for industrial purpose Part 1 : General requirements. I felt that the connector came up short, but told the vendor that if they were to get the connector approved to that standard, for use in my application, through any notified body, then I would accept it. It took nearly 9 months but they managed to do it. I didn't ask how many design iterations they had to go through. You could try the same thing with your supplier. -doug Douglas E.
