John, Primarily because there is no Australian equivalent specific to AC/DC adapters etc. AS/NZS 60950 is 1 of a couple of standards which may be applied. 60950 is usually applied, particularly where the adapter is used with IT type equipment, because it is readily applicable to this type of device also.
