George, If you were advised "by a local expert" as you say then I would strongly recommend you clarify exactly what they mean. I will presume you are referring to a laptop which is required to comply with Australian telecommunications regulatory requirements (A-Tick etc). Telecommunications devices are regulated by the TLN (Telecommunications Labelling Notice). The safety standard specified by the TLN for such devices is: - ACA TS001:1997 (acceptable until 30 Jun 04): or - AS/NZS 60950:2000 Test reports to IEC or EN standards are not acceptable as the report must clearly state compliance with either of the above standards (NOTE: IEC 60950 3rd Ed + Australian National deviations would be acceptable in lieu of AS/NZS 60950:2000). If your product was introduced 12 months ago it must have been compliant with TS001 (which in turn requires compliance with AS/NZS 3260:1993 plus amendments 1, 2, 3 & 4 - or IEC 60950 2nd Ed plus amendments 1, 2, 3 & 4 + Australian National deviations). There is no requirement for any product that complied by way of TS001 and introduced prior to 1 Jul 04 to be retested against AS/NZS 60950:2000. IMPORTANT There is another possibility however. The advice you have received may be in relation to your AC/DC adapter being supplied with the product.. If you are using a third party AC/DC adapter as most companies do it may be that the electrical safety approval is coming up for renewal. All AC/DC adapters must be "approved" in terms of electrical safety by an Australian Electrical Authority etc. These approvals are issued for 5 years duration and must be renewed at the end of 5 years if they are going to be continued to be supplied in the Australian market. At time of renewal, the device must meet the "current" safety standard. Many AC/DC adapter manufactures gain approval for their AC/DC adapters by way of compliance with AS/NZS 3260 (or the equivalent EN or IEC standard). As such, any AC/DC adapter approved prior to Sep 2000 would not have applied for compliance on the basis of compliance with AS/NZS 60950:2000 (EN 60950 2nd Ed etc). Any such AC/DC adapter now coming up for renewal must now comply with AS/NZS 60950:2000. In addition, there may be another issue with your AC/DC adapter. All mains plugs and devices incorporating integral pins for connection to the mains must, by 3 Apr 05, comply with AS/NZS 3112:2000 Appendix J at all points of sale (i.e. any device which is already being supplied and will continue to be supplied after 3 Apr 05 and all devices newly introduced from 3 Apr 05. Appendix J relates to the requirement that all mains plug pins be insulated to minimize accidental contact. Here is the question- since the product has been selling in Australia for at least 12 months, and sine we have had no "form factor" or AC adapter changes, and since we are compliant to EN60950 2nd ed.... is there some "grandfathering" clause or consideration that we can use to keep from going through the update to 3rd ed.?
