The internet infrastructure in the US is a mess once you get off the beaten path at all.
For a while there was talk of doing something with the internet like they did way back when with the rural electrification projects of the 1920s and 30's, but I think that was shelve when the government starting bailing out the banks and GM etc. I didn't realize how bad it can be until a friend of mine moved out of a small town of about 4000 to a different location about 12 miles west. He is currently about 6 miles east off of a major interstate highway in Indiana (I-69). He and I both have Verizon cell service ( some of the best coverage in the area ). Still, his cell signal at his house is marginal at best. Some days it doesn't work at all. He uses a Verizon wireless modem to get onto the internet, but Verizon's rates are very limiting, but it appears to be the best solution at the moment. They have no cable service there, or DSL. There is a guy offering Wifi via a directional antenna but he would have to put up a 75 foot tower to get over some trees that are in the way. It is too bad that they are still gouging for T1 lines. I considered getting a fractional T1 line about 10 years ago and I think it was about $600 per month plus equipment rental. I think a full T1 was over $1000 per month. The poor state of the infrastructure in the US is really going to bite this country in the butt eventually. Dave On 3/12/2011 12:51 PM, Kirk Wallace wrote: > On Sat, 2011-03-12 at 09:34 +0000, Ian W.
