Even in suburban areas it is not great!  I used to have DSL, but the 
cables in the area are so bad I now BARELY have plain phone service.  We 
have a RT (remote terminal) half a mile away that works great, but you 
only get analog phone.  We have a line to the CO that used to be 12,000 
feet, just barely functional for DSL, but after rerouting the lines 
several times, it is now 18,000 feet, DSL is completely out.

So, the ONLY internet service is Charter Cable.  They won't pay for 
proper access to the network backbone, so the ping times are insane, 60 
ms to anywhere at best.  When I go to work, I see what REAL internet is 
like, the difference is astounding!  I can ping nodes in Japan (well, 
maybe not today) in 25 ms or so.

We have no option, so Charter is practically the only game in town, and 
they act like they know it.

We have a relatively new subdivision with $500,000 homes next door, and 
almost everything in the area is
taxed as $300K or more.  So, we are not out in the stix at all.
