Who needs 3-phase?  Now that VFDs are affordable, there really is no 
problem, unless you
want to put in a whole factory full of Fadals or whatever.  Then, they'd 
MAKE you get 3-phase
anyway.

There are places where the power is really bad, like at the far end of a 
15-mile rural road, where
a bunch of guys have welders, central air conditioning and electric 
clothes dryers ahead of you
on the line.  But, in most of the US, single-phase power doesn't mean 
BAD power.  Our power
here is amazingly reliable.  When I was a kid, every time there was 
lightning, the power went out.
Now, it is a very rare event.  I have no UPS's on my computers, and 
generally go 45 - 120 days
between reboots, and it rarely has to do with power problems.
